Discovering Small Summer Joys: A petite list of the things of self-cultivating activities

Summer is here to cleanse our energy, find energy and deepen our connection to the earth. Ready to find newness in the mundane and slow living? That is how we will grow and come back stronger to dive refuelled in the new season of fall again.

Embracing slowness

While summer reaches its peak, we're apt to reflect and reorientate ourselves as we feel disconnected from our daily life and routines. In the summertime, the constraints and expectations of daily life fall away from time to time, and we find ourselves in the quiet company of our inner self. This phase of unstructuredness leaves room for spontaneity and curiosity and fertile space for newness.

No one but ourselves gives us full permission to live life as an expression of joy. Acknowledging that the best feelings are internally cultivated can shift our perception of well-being. If we affirm trust in the self and regularly permit moments for the self, we start feeling more connected and at ease with life. It's in these moments we notice the abundance around us.

Starting small and knowing that simple feelings and small acts are enough lets us reach higher states of well-being. This is a gentle reminder that it is often the mundane yet mindful moments that are the most meaningful. As summer reaches its peak, we dare to welcome new beginnings and change.

La dolce fa niente - the art of doing nothing, as the Italians say, it’s watching the world go by over coffee and a cornetto. In our most hectic world where everything is done at a frantic pace and time is of the essence, it can be easy to forget to slow down and smell the roses and freshly baked cornettos. In the summer, with longer days, we can make the most of our time by slowing down and appreciating the little moments that might otherwise be missed.

Having a shared dinner al fresco

Gathering around the table and sharing meals is another true recipe for reaching higher states of well-being. Eating together and sharing a meal alfresco triggers the release of mood enhancing hormones, more than any detox recipe ever will. The best part of it: in summer we are blessed with all the freshness of fruits and vegetables. So there is no better way than getting some seasonal freshness from the local market and indulging in homemade dishes prepared with love, care and joy - together.

In the summertime, the constraints and expectations of daily life fall away from time to time and leave fertile space for newness.

Plunging into the open water

Whenever you take a dip in the water, picture yourself washing away your stress and anxiety. Focus on the sensation of the water as it falls on your skin. Imagine the water washing away your negative thoughts. Wash away sadness, anger, regret, self-doubt, and everything else. Let it all go down to the unknown bottom. You are fresh, your body is at peace, your mind is clear, your senses are alert, and you are ready for the exciting time ahead. For now it’s just the self, and there is nothing to do, nowhere to go, no one to answer, and no one to answer to. Just be.

Stargazing

During the lazy summer nights, instead of staying indoors and watching TV, why not go outside and gaze at the stars? Although most of us are living in cities, there are ways to get around this. You can choose to go to the nearest park, a rooftop, a forest, or any other place that is away from the city lights. When you look up, we can see the universe’s biggest mystery – the stars. They are like tiny, blinking diamonds that have been shining for thousands of years and will continue to do so. Being outside, away from all the hustle and bustle, will help slow down and relax. And, at the same time, we get to see something truly fascinating – the stars.

Reading in the sun

The sun is a great source of Vitamin D which is not just good for your overall health but also important for our mental state. The summer is the perfect time to read those books that have been collecting dust on your shelves. While you we at it, we can enjoy the sun and get our essential dose of Vitamin D at the same time.
